Students have the opportunity to come to the Criminal Justice program as juniors or seniors in high school. During their first year of criminal justice, students will learn the components of the Criminal Justice System. This includes three main components: Law Enforcement, Courts and Corrections.
During their time in class, students will learn many different things:
Law Enforcement:
*Use of Force *Search Warrants *Types of Policing *Different Police Careers
*Police Ethics *Misdemeanors *Felonies *Criminal Law
*Proper Handcuffing *Traffic Laws *PPO's *Exceptions to Search Warrants
*Police Report Writing *Role Play Scenarios *PPCT *Guest Speakers
Courts:
*Courtroom Procedure *Proper Court Set up *Prosecutor *Defense Attorney's
*Judges *Evidence Admissibility *Civil Law *Field Trips
Corrections:
*Jail Life *Types of Jails *Juvenile Corrections *Death Penalty
*Offender Treatment *Recidivism *Legal Issues *Community Corrections
At the end of the school year, first year junior students who are at a grade of B or higher will be eligible to interview to come back for a second year. Currently the interviews are done with the placement sites that are willing to take students the next school year. If students do not pass the interview process, they are NOT eligible to come back for a 2nd year.
